There is something about Michigan in December that makes you want to slow down, pull on your warmest coat, and find somewhere serving hot chocolate.
Maybe it’s the first real snow covering the pines. Maybe it’s the little downtowns wrapped in Christmas lights. Or perhaps it’s knowing that somewhere up north, there’s probably a fireplace, a snowy trail, and a warm meal waiting at the end of the day.
After years of winter travel, I’ve learned that the best December trips aren’t necessarily about cramming in as much as possible. They’re about finding places that actually feel like winter.
Michigan has plenty of them.
Start With Christmas in Frankenmuth
If you’re looking for a place that embraces Christmas without apology, make your way to Frankenmuth.
Known as Michigan’s “Little Bavaria,” the town’s German-inspired buildings already give it a storybook quality. Add Christmas lights, decorated storefronts and the possibility of fresh snow, and December takes things to another level.
The most famous stop is Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland, a massive Christmas store where ornaments, lights and decorations seem to stretch forever. Michigan’s tourism office describes it as the world’s largest Christmas store.
Plan a Frankenmuth visit with Pure Michigan
But don’t make the mistake of visiting Bronner’s and immediately leaving town.
Walk Main Street after dark. Browse the smaller shops. Stop for something warm. And if you have time, stay overnight.
Frankenmuth is one of those places that’s considerably better after the day-trippers start heading home.
Wander Through Michigan’s Christmas Markets
Michigan has quietly become a wonderful destination for European-inspired Christmas markets.
You’ll find holiday markets and celebrations in communities around the state, including Grand Rapids, Detroit, Holland and Ann Arbor. Expect local crafts, food, holiday drinks, music and plenty of opportunities to find gifts that didn’t come from a giant online retailer.

If you like your Christmas shopping with a little atmosphere, this is the way to do it.
Spend a December Weekend in Holland
Holland gets most of its attention during tulip season, but I’ve always thought December reveals a completely different side of the town.
Its Dutch heritage fits surprisingly well with the holidays.
During the season, Dutch Winterfest brings holiday activities and Dutch traditions to downtown Holland, including the arrival of Sinterklaas and seasonal treats.
Then give yourself time simply to explore downtown.
Some of my favorite winter travel memories haven’t involved a major attraction at all. They’ve involved wandering into a locally owned shop because the windows looked inviting and staying longer than expected.
Holland is perfect for that kind of afternoon.
Go Ice Skating in Downtown Detroit
Detroit deserves a place on your December itinerary.
At the center of the action is Campus Martius Park, where downtown lights, winter activities and skating create one of Michigan’s most festive urban holiday settings.
Come late in the afternoon.
Explore downtown while there’s still daylight, grab dinner, and then return once the lights come on.
That’s when the city feels completely different.
Find a Snowy Michigan Trail
Eventually, I have to escape the Christmas music and get into the woods.
Michigan makes that easy.
December can open the door to snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and winter hiking throughout the state. Pure Michigan lists more than 40 skiing and snowboarding resorts, so you don’t have to be an expert skier—or travel all the way to the Upper Peninsula—to find snow.
For beginners, I’d recommend trying snowshoeing.
It’s wonderfully uncomplicated: dress warmly, find a suitable trail and walk.
Make a Winter Escape to Northern Michigan
If your idea of a December vacation involves more winter rather than less, head north.
Places such as Petoskey, Traverse City, Gaylord, Marquette and Houghton become entirely different destinations once snow arrives.
Petoskey is especially appealing for a romantic December getaway, while Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is where I’d go when I really want that snow-covered-north-country feeling.
You don’t need a packed itinerary.
Book a cozy place to stay, explore during daylight, find a local restaurant at night and leave room for whatever you discover along the way.
Take a Holiday Light Road Trip
Here’s a December tradition that doesn’t get enough credit: get in the car after dinner and simply go looking for Christmas lights.
Michigan’s historic downtowns make excellent destinations for this.
Pick two or three towns close enough together to create a weekend loop. Add a Christmas market, a bakery, a local restaurant and perhaps a night at a small inn.
Suddenly you’ve created a December getaway rather than just another shopping weekend.
Why December Is Worth the Trip
Michigan in December isn’t about escaping winter.
It’s about enjoying it.
There’s something refreshing about traveling somewhere that doesn’t pretend December is just another month. Michigan lights the streets, opens the skating rinks, fires up the ski lifts and puts the hot cider on.
Bring gloves. Bring boots. Keep an eye on the weather.
And leave a little room in the car for that ornament you swore you weren’t going to buy.
